Mailchimp Integration with Pirsonal

Pirsonal’s integration with Mailchimp helps you to instantly update Mailchimp when a personalized video or an interactive video is successfully created.

In this article, you’ll learn how the Mailchimp connection with Pirsonal works so that you can automatically add personalized and interactive videos to your email marketing campaigns, audiences, customer journeys, websites, and landing pages.

Things you should know before you start

  1. If you don’t have a Mailchimp account, please go ahead and create one.
  2. If for any reason this integration with Mailchimp is not a good fit for you, you can use our Zapier app, Pirsonal’s API, or Integromat.
  3. At this time, Pirsonal’s integration with Mailchimp works at an account level and not yet at a template level. If you need to connect different Mailchimp accounts, audiences, or lists with Pirsonal at the same time, using Zapier, Integromat, or our API will work better for you.
  4. Please note that this integration is only triggered when a personalized or interactive video is successfully created (“done” status). Videos with “error” status will not trigger this sending personalized video data to Mailchimp, which is something you need to manage. Access the video list or the notification section to see the videos that were not created because of an error.
  5. This integration will only send personalized video and interactive video data to Mailchimp when you use the “text” Audience field types.

Understanding the Mailchimp connections fields

Mailchimp Key

Mailchimp users with Manager permissions can generate and view their own API keys. Users with Admin permissions can also see API keys for other account users. To find your Mailchimp API Key, please follow these steps from your Mailchimp account:
  1. Click this link to navigate to the API Keys section of your Mailchimp account: Your API Keys
  2. Copy an existing API key or click the Create A Key button.
  3. Name your key descriptively, so you know what application uses that key.

List ID or Audience ID

Mailchimp audiences have a unique audience ID (also called list IDs). These are used to connect and transfer subscriber data.

The audience ID is generated by Mailchimp when the audience is created and cannot be changed.

To find your audience ID, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Audience icon.
  2. Click All contacts.
  3. If you have more than one audience, click the Current audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  4. Click the Settings drop-down and choose Audience name and defaults.
  5. In the Audience ID section, you’ll see a string of letters and numbers. This is your audience ID.

Video ID

Add the text merge tag from Mailchimp here. For this, use an existing merge tag or create a new one. Mailchimp has different audience field types for merge tags. It’s really important that in this case, you use the “text” audience field type, otherwise, no data will be added to Mailchimp from Pirsonal.

To create a new one, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Audience icon.
    Cursor Clicks - Audience icon
  2. Click Audience dashboard.
    Cursor Clicks - Audience dashboard
  3. If you have more than one audience, click the Current audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  4. Click the Manage Audience drop-down and choose Signup Forms.
  5. In the Settings dropdown, click Audience fields and *|MERGE|* tags.
  6. Click Add A Field to see the available field types and choose “Text”
    Audience Field Type in Mailchimp
  7. Type a name for the field, and click Save.

Mapping fields from Pirsonal to Mailchimp

Every personalized video, interactive video, and dynamic landing page created with Pirsonal runs behind a unique ID. You can securely associate CRM data, keywords, and custom metadata to each ID.

This information, along with the ID, is sent to Mailchimp when a personalized video or interactive video is successfully created (“done” status).

The following is the association of fields names between Pirsonal and Mailchimp.

If you are using the keywords and data fields from Pirsonal, note that these fields will be added as contact tags in Mailchimp. To send several keywords and data strings from Pirsonal to Mailchimp, separate them by commas.

Video URL for Mailchimp

Every time you create a personalized video or an interactive video with Pirsonal, a video ID is created.

When using the Video ID field from the Mailchimp Connection page in Pirsonal for the given template, Pirsonal will update the merge tag you’ve typed in Mailchimp with the video ID from Pirsonal.

In Mailchimp, use this merge tag for inclusion in the URL you’ll share with your contacts or audience. For this, use the following merge tag property to create the video or dynamic landing URL:

*|URL:YOUR_MERGETAG|*

This merge tag encodes the value of your merge tag (which is the video ID) for inclusion in a URL.

There are different types of URLs you can use from Pirsonal to share the content with your audience depending on how you want them to see the video.

Sharing the Dynamic Landing Page URL from Pirsonal Pages

If you want to share a dynamic landing page from Pirsonal Pages and you are running on the standard platform, use the following URL structure:

https://vid.pirsonal.com/YOUR-VIDEO-ID-MERGE-TAG-GOES-HERE

Update “YOUR-VIDEO-ID-MERGE-TAG-GOES-HERE” with the merge tag for the Video ID as set up in the Mailchimp Connection page for the chosen template.

For example, if you have an audience field with the merge tag, *|VIDEO_ID_01|*, and the value includes something like 12345678901234567890 — in your link, use http://vid.pirsonal.com.com/*|URL:VIDEO_ID_01|* to URL encode the value like: https://vid.pirsonal.com/12345678901234567890.

Sharing the video in fullscreen with Pirsonal Player

If you want your audience or contact to open the video in fullscreen, simply use the following URL structure instead:

https://vid.pirsonal.com/embed/YOUR-VIDEO-ID-MERGE-TAG-GOES-HERE

Folllowing the same example from above, then, in your link, use http://vid.pirsonal.com.com/embed/*|URL:VIDEO_ID_01|* to URL encode the value like: https://vid.pirsonal.com/embed/12345678901234567890.

Testing and troubleshooting

You should always preview and test that your contacts are added or updated with the merge tag you have chosen before your campaign goes out. Here are some things to know about testing merge tags in Mailchimp with personalized data from Pirsonal.

  • Once you have added the Mailchimp connection to your Pirsonal account, create a new campaign using the Campaign tool from Pirsonal, Zapier, or any other connection with your Pirsonal account.
  • Make sure to populate Pirsonal’s CRM fields (First Name, Last Name, Email – Email is required), and metadata fields (keywords, data).
  • Test with at list one contact.
  • To see a live preview of your merge tags, toggle the Enable live merge tag info slider to the green checkmark in Preview Mode.
  • Merge tags do not preview in Mailchimp’s Template Editor. To test these merge tags, create a campaign from the saved template and use their preview and test tools.
  • If you use merge tags in your signup forms from Mailchimp and response emails, sign up through your Mailchimp form and review how the merge tags appear in each step of the process.
  • If merge tags aren’t working the way you expect, check Mailchimp’s troubleshooting guide.
